High unemployment caused protests and arrests of the protesters in various cities around Iran. The protests are against Iran’s religious leader and others in the government. The protests reflect growing discontent over rising prices and corruption, as well as Iran’s costly involvement in Syria and Iraq.

The Trump administration Washington condemned the arrests and voiced support for anti-government protesters in its statement Friday.
“There are many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with the regime’s corruption and its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. “The Iranian government should respect their people’s rights, including their right to express themselves,”

The U.S. State Department said “Iran’s leaders have turned a wealthy country with a rich history and culture into an economically depleted rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed, and chaos,” said spokeswoman Heather Nauert.
President Trump tweeted: “Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption & its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad. Iranian govt should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching!” As President Trump has said, the longest-suffering victims of Iran’s leaders are Iran’s own people. urged “all nations to publicly support the Iranian people and their demands for basic rights and an end to corruption.”

In social media footage riot police were seen using water cannon and tear gas to disperse crowds.

Openly political protests are rare in Iran, where security services are omnipresent and arrest demonstraters. Iran has a theocratic Constitution and is ruled by a religious leader.
