An aircraft goes up only and because it has the power to do it but small up and down movement comes from the elevators which are on the horizontal stabilizer. On the Learjet 60 the horizontal stabilizer is in two pieces on either side of the fuselage. They are missing is the photographs of the jet as it is crashing. It is difficult to conceive of the force that would rip them off the aircraft but they are missing in the photos. The aircraft was completely out of the control of the pilot and co-pilot. Some of the missing pieces were located a mile and up to 4 miles from the crash meaning they separated before the crash but were not the cause of it. The cause is under investigation. A most unfortunate chain of events. The most likely cause is the pilots decided to fly where they should not have flown. It appears they flew too close or right into a major storm. During my first trip as a pilot to Disneyworld in Florida I was checking weather enroute and was told airline pilots would fly 100 miles out of their way to avoid a thunderstorm. Too bad the Learjet pilots didn’t heed or didn’t know about that.
