Not only should you be proud of yourself, you should be proud of the achievement of anyone. Pride is acquisition of the values of character that make life worth sustaining and of course life is worth sustaining so the pope is clearly out of touch with the real world and people when he condemns pride. But the pope is correct within his mindset that people must perform the role of a sacrificial character and practice self-immolation as a moral virtue or duty. He goes against everything good about the world. People must shape their soul with immense self-esteem which means pride as Aristotle knew is the crown of all virtue. Pride means moral excellence which is what the pope hopes you never attain because his job depends on you being evil.
Aristotle says, “The man is thought to be proud who thinks himself worthy of great things and is worthy of them.” The proud man, in Aristotle’s definition, is also good: he seeks honor, gains honor, responds appropriately to that honor because he is good. This is what the pope opposes and condemns and why he and his type are so dangerous. Their objective is a diminished life on earth for rewards that require death to aquire.
