Growing up in Philadelphia gave me no idea at all about South Africa. I was well into mid-life when I first went there. Apartheid was in power. Johannesburg was the destination and while the Latin Mass had gone in America it was still used in Jo’Berg.

The flight from JFK to South Africa was far too long to make it in one flight. The 8 hour PanAm flight stopped at Isle d’Sal, the island of salt in the Cape Verde Island group just off of West Africa. The Boeing 707 was re-fueled and the second leg from Isle d’Sal to Johannesburg took another 9 hours. On the way with Bill Slattery and Bill Crill we had a virtual party in the aircraft as the crew changed and the first crew helped open the booze lockers and we were flying high when we landed in Jo-burg. I fel in love with South Africa from that first trip and onto so many more. Unfortunately, white rule passed onto black rule and SOuth Africa is actually physically danger ous for white people these days. President Trump has acknowledged that and invited the Afrikaners to immigrate to America.
