The Left-wing thinks President Trumps selection of Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson is wrong because Tillerson has no government experience but neither did Obama’s pick as Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagen have any experience arguing on her feet in front of an appeals court.
Every person has intelligence which is used to make choices and decisions. Tilletson has an immense amount of experience making correct decisions of the most consequential kind. Just as Donald Trump has no experience being President, Tillerson has no experience as a government diplomat but both have made consequential decisions for decades.
An individual’s performance on one type of cognitive task tends to be comparable to that person’s performance on other kinds of cognitive tasks. The practical validity of intelligence as a predictor of future events is more far-ranging and universal than that of any other known psychological variable. The validity of intelligence is greater the greater the complexity of the task. Intelligence is even more important than personality. Intelligence can be understood in terms of what an individual can do, or what his or her maximal performance is, while personality can be thought of in terms of what an individual will typically do, or what his or her general tendencies of behavior are. So it is with Trump and Tillerson. The more complicated the situation the more valuable is high intelligence.
It’s the level of their intellects that’s the issue, not the specific experiences.
Both have unusually high “mental energy”. Both are superbly intellectually qualified to be President and Secretary of State. Both will make complicated decisions that affect millions of people and they both will do well.
