Lower Makefield passed the Motion to Reject the Delaware and Lehigh Scenic corridor. Upper Makefield passed the Motion to Rescind the Resolution to support the D & L Corridor. Good for both Makefields. A few Lower Makefield residents worked about five days trying to convince residents the D&L Corridor was a bad deal. Upper Makefield worked for a month to get the Resolution Rescinded. Both townships saw the light when the Board of Supervisor meetings were overflowing with agitated people. Only one resident spoke in support of government increasing regulations over private property and he was booed. Many times.
But the Bad Deal Corridor is still going on. D & L is a private corporation that’s in the Grant Harvesting Business. There’s loads of Grant Money and D & L wants to score millions. The problem is government wants to freeze changes and force the status quo on property owners. No more deciding to change the look of the siding or change the aluminum storm windows to vinyl. No change means repairing things the same they were when they broke.
The Makefields showed why local government must be watched. “As nightfall does not come all at once neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air — however slight — lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.” Wm. O. Douglas
