Russia delivers gas and oil to Europe thru the pipelines in Ukraine.
Russia provides approximately a quarter of the natural gas consumed in the European Union; approximately 80% of those exports travel through pipelines across Ukrainian soil prior to arriving in Europe. Putin must keep the pipelines open because Russia is in bad shape economically so Russia needs the money from the sale of gas and oil.
