The Daily Caller reports that “New York Times reporter James Risen called the Obama administration “the greatest enemy of press freedom that we have encountered in at least a generation” on Friday, explaining that the White House seeks to control the flow of information and those who refuse to play along “will be punished.” At the same conference Robert Litt, the administration’s top lawyer for the national intelligence community likened reporting on national security leaks to drunk driving, arguing that we ban the practice despite the fact that there isn’t always a victim.
“Not every drunk driver causes a fatal accident,” he explained, “but we ban drunk driving because it increases the risk of accidents. In the same way, we classify information because of the risk of harm, even if no harm actually can be shown in the end from any particular disclosure.”

Putin sent unmarked troops into Crimea in violation of International laws. An improper election was held and the majority of the voters decided Crimea should join Russia. The rights of the minority in Crimea were thereby violated but there was no way to enforce those rights. It would be like New Jersey voters electing to join Russia and the minority becoming Russian citizens. Not everything is subject to a vote.
The Ukraine had an obligation to defend and protect Crimea but Ukraine was unable to stop Putin. Any country could step in but the United Nations isn’t inclined to oppose Russia. Neither is America but the moral case is clear. Anyone has the moral authority to stop a rogue nation. The practical side is no one want’s to oppose Russia over the Crimea except to impose some fig-leaf sanctions.
Many of the major foreign policy moves of President Obama reduced the power, security and influence of America and its European allies. Does that make him more dangerous than Putin? Your answer depends on your ideas about positive or negative influences. What is not done can be more dangerous than what is done. Putin sent his military to Ukraine. Barack Obama didn’t. Sic Transit Gloria.
