Not so fast on the grant for Recycling Performance. It’s for 2009, not 2011.

The Courier published “Towns turning trash into cash” on Dec 28, 2011 but the report was based on performance in 2009, two years ago. Northampton was the Super-Star of the 31 municipalities with 14.55 thousand tons recycled. aT 2,000 pounds per ton that’s 29.51 Million Pounds.  The State DEP is handing Northampton $327,458 which averages 23 bucks per property; 8 bucks per person.

The true value to each property owner is the savings in plastic trash bags. Using a hard container means the recyclables don’t have to be put in a plastic trash bag. It’s at least 52 bags a year. For some properties 104 bags saved each year.

Each property sent 43  pounds of recyclable trash each week (Is that True??)and that earned each property 6 cents a day. You figure out what your time was worth and the effort you put forth to get  6 cents a day. Oh wait. You didn’t save anything. You won’t see one penny for your time and effort. The  township gets the money, not you.

That’s not the entire story. The grant is in addition to the money the township was paid by the recyclers. That number will be forthcoming but it’s estimated to be at least $25 per property. Add that to the grant money and the saving in plastic trash bags and it’s clear that recycling is about more than it seems. Developing…

How many senses are possessed by a human?  1. Sight, 2.Smell, 3.Taste, 4.Touch, and 5.Hearing, Humans also have: 6. Absolute Musical Pitch Sensation, i.e., Perfect Pitch. (It’s rare but it’s a sense) 7. Balance (equilibrioception), 8.Pressure, 9.Temperature (thermoception) 10.Pain (nociception) 11.Pleasure, 12. Extreme Pleasure (Dopamine/VMAT2 sensors), 13. Acceleration 14. Proprioception is the sense of the relative position of neighboring parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. It is distinguished from:  15. Exteroception, by which we perceive the boundaries of the outside world, 16. Interoception, by which we perceive pain, hunger, etc., and the movement of internal organs, 17. Kinesthesia,  18. Synesthesia, in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another. For example, the hearing of a sound may result in the sensation of the visualization of a color, or a shape may be sensed as a smell. Synesthesia is hereditary and it is estimated that it occurs in 1 out of 1000 individuals with variations of type and intensity. The most common forms of synesthesia link numbers or letters with colors and 19. a sense of being poisoned which in turn causes nausea.

are neurologically linked to the brain.

  • 20. Pulmonary stretch receptors are found in the lungs and control the respiratory rate.
  • 21. Peripheral chemoreceptors in the brain monitor the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the brain to give a feeling of suffocation if carbon dioxide levels get too high.[14]
  • 22. The chemoreceptor trigger zone is an area of the medulla in the brain that receives inputs from blood-borne drugs or hormones, and communicates with the vomiting center.
  • 23. Chemoreceptors in the circulatory system also measure salt levels and prompt thirst if they get too high (they can also respond to high sugar levels in diabetics[15]).
  • 24. Cutaneous receptors in the skin not only respond to touch, pressure, and temperature, but also respond to vasodilation in the skin such as blushing.
  • 25. Stretch receptors in the gastrointestinal tract sense gas distension that may result in colic pain.
  • 26. Stimulation of sensory receptors in the esophagus result in sensations felt in the throat when swallowing, vomiting, or during acid reflux.
  • 27. Sensory receptors in pharynx mucosa, similar to touch receptors in the skin, sense foreign objects such as food that may result in a gag reflex and corresponding gagging sensation.
  • 28. Stimulation of sensory receptors in the urinary bladder and rectum may result in sensations of fullness.
  • 29. Stimulation of stretch sensors that sense dilation of various blood vessels may result in pain, for example headache caused by vasodilation of brain arteries.

But there is no Common Sense. There’s no sense of Manners, of Taste in clothes or designs, nor are there other senses although some people ascribe things like ESP to a so-called sixth sense. Many attributes which humans display are not from the body, i.e., from the senses but from the mind. The mind is a self-assembling mechanism according to Stephen Pinker, an honored Cognitive Neuro-Science researcher. The mind shapes itself and can regress, stagnate or improve itself.

According to the Associated Press, movie crowds dipped to a 16 year low. [1] “Just what has kept the movie business in the dumps the rest of 2011 is anyone’s guess — though safe bets include the tight economy, rising ticket prices, backlash against parades of sequels or remakes, and an almost-limitless inventory of portable and at-home gadgetry to occupy people’s time.”

The AP did not use the word TV. I wonder why? My guess is TV has caused the downturn in movie attendance.

TV has recently made quantum leaps in consumer TV’s. I remember the first TV sets. E.G., 1948, a 10 inch screen, Emerson Console. Three channels, only black and white, live shows, limited commercials and a sense of wonder at having moving pictures in the living room.

The essence of a movie is movement. Whether on a movie screen or in the home, the essentials are the same. Sure it’s far better to see an action thriller or a mystery on a large screen with powerful sound systems and no commercial breaks but home TV has become Home Theatre. The AP article didn’t report on the number of movies viewed at home but it’s larger that the number of movies viewed in a theatre.

Most people watch movies at home on a huge digital set with a remote to calm down the commercials. TV’s with remotes viewed at home. That explains what happened to the viewers at the large theatres.

Noveau Beaujolais is a wine sold 6 to 8 weeks after the grapes are picked. George DuBoeuf devised a brilliant marketing idea that led to the practice of releasing the New Beaujolais in December.

This year the Noveau Beaujolais is spectacular but the government in Pennsylvania added 44% to the list price, thus forcing the citizens of PA to overpay for Noveau Beaujolais, It is $12.99 in PA and $8.99 in New Jersey. Goes to show how government makes everything more expensive and why the State Store system is bad for citizens.

“As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances there is a twilight when everything remains unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air — however slight — lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.”

Justice William O. Douglas

President Kennedy echoed Justice Douglas’ warning when, in his inaugural address, the new President said we are “unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights”. Human Rights are recent upon the stage of human history. They are not yet fully understood.

Rumor has it an elected official became extremely upset; began f-blasting; got even more agitated; used even more despicable language; kept up the atrocious behavior; was asked by police, we believe off-duty, to leave; refused; became even more abusive using language that embarrassed every adult within earshot, language that I’ve never heard before and which embarrassed me when it was reported, and, which official was finally persuaded to leave and had to be helped outside by another elected official. We have names but because we believe in not mentioning names when the consequences of the report would be damaging and because we have respect for ourselves will not be the first to publish them. It’s being reported as a rumor. It’s based on reports from people who have credibility and we believe the incident happened just about the way it’s reported above. Of course it may be unfair to every official who was not involved but there is no alternative which reveals itself. The lack of knowledge about the personal life of an official who goes far over the line make it prudent to keep certain information to one’s self.

It is unfortunate when we witness people who cannot control themselves. It’s even worse for people who are elected officials. They are held to a different standard, as they should be, because they have power because of their position and more responsibility. An incident like this embarrasses innocent bystanders who are swept into an incident through nothing more than they happen to be near the miscreant. The embarrassment is because even though people have accidents some bad behavior far exceeds the norm. Adults have a vast range of experiences that inures them to the unusual and to the abnormal but when the un-acceptable goes well past even the most flexible standard, we cringe inwardly. We hope this incident doesn’t happen again although word of mouth indicates it’s happened before and more than once.   Developing…

Deon lost by 374 votes out of a total number of 8,218 who voted in Northampton. That’s 4.55% but it’s not the whole story. Deon received 3,836 votes but 4,738 Republicans voted. Why did 902 Republicans not vote for Deon? That’s a significant percentage of registered Republicans who didn’t vote the party line. It’s 19%. So just looking at the losing margin (4.55%) gives a false impression that the Republican loss was smaller than what it actually was. Nineteen percent of the Republican voters didn’t vote for Deon.

But there’s another number that’s important too. It’s the number of Republicans who voted for the Democrat. That number increases the number of Republicans who voted against Deon. That number would show the total level of dis-satisfaction among Republican voters. That’s the issue going foreword because that’s what needs to be addressed by the Republican leadership. Why are so many registered Republicans not satisfied with the tactics of the Republican leadership?

On the Democrat side, the number of Democrats who voted for Democrat Candidate Dr. Kimberly Rose was 2,974 but the total number of votes she received was 42% higher than the number of Democrats who voted. A 42% shift is extraordinary because it means Dr. Rose and the Northampton Democrats won in large measure because of the negative feelings towards the Republicans and their leadership.

If you followed those issues on the rest of this website you probably know in considerable detail many of the issues by which the Northampton Republican’s caused their own downfall. The Democrats worked much harder this election than they ever worked before so a lot of the credit for Dr. Rose’s victory is due to their extra hard work. What’s not quantified is the number of Republicans who worked against Deon.

It’s not accurate to blame only Vince Deon for losing control of Northampton for the first time in 300 years. Lots of Republicans worked very hard to win. But the damage was done over many years by the blindness of the Republican leadership. They failed to grasp how badly the public viewed their candidates and their activities. The loss of Northampton was caused because the Republican Leadership tried to paper over the problems when they should have taken steps to correct them. They kept supporting the bad actors instead of getting them out of power. They made other elected officials support the bad actors in Northampton. Out of fear many Republicans who should have stepped up decided to just go along and endorse the incumbent. Once again, just like four years ago, the voters had to do what the Republican Leaders failed to do.

In Northampton Township Republicans outnumber Democrats by 2,420 voters. That’s a 22% advantage in favor of the Republicans. On Nov 8th all of the Republican candidates won in Northampton except one.  4,738 Republicans voted but only 3,836 voted for Incumbent Republican Supervisor Vince Deon. Why did 902 Republicans not vote for a sitting supervisor? 902 divided by 4,738 is 19%. Why did the Northampton Republicans lose 19% of the registered Republican voters? If all of the registered Republican voters had voted for Deon he would have won by 538 votes. What caused the Republican voters to purposely abandon an incumbent supervisor, knowing the Democrats would be put in charge of the township? Remember that the same thing happened four years ago when two other incumbent supervisors lost to two Democrat challengers. Many reasons are offered and it’s certain that the Republican voters did not abandon the incumbent because of an oversight. All of the other Republican candidates won in Northampton. This was a deliberate no-confidence vote by 19% of the Republicans who voted. This was a serious loss for the Northampton Republican Party and the Republican leaders would be wise to identify the reasons that caused it and learn from it. As a registered Republican who supports the party, I warned them in February that it would happen. So I get to say: “I Told You”. Will they learn a lesson from the loss? I know these people. I’ve run against them. In fact, I’m the only person in Northampton who ran against every supervisor on the board of supervisors, both Democrat and Republican. My bet? They will continue to follow the wrong path. I hope not. I hope they will begin to do some of the right things to win back Northampton because that will benefit the people of Northampton, but at this moment my bet is that they will not because they cannot. Oh well.

4,738 Republicans voted and 2,974 Democrats. The total number of “Others” was 506. Deon received 3,836 votes. Rose received 4,210 so the winning margin was 374 votes. But the total number of Democrats who voted was only 2,974 which was 1,236 fewer than the total number of votes, (4.210), she received. From where did the 1,236 Non-Democrat votes come?  There were 902 Republicans who voted who did not vote for Deon. (4,738 Republicans who voted minus the 3,836 who voted for Deon.) When the number of Republicans who did not vote for Deon is added to the total number of Democrats who voted  for Rose, (that’s 3,876 votes) which is 334 less than the total votes for Rose. Where did 334 votes come from? They could only have come from those registered “Other”. Dr. Rose won by 374 votes because of the voters who are not registered with either major party. Was this The Tea Party Effect?  We report. You decide.

Courage is regarded as a higher virtue because it requires an ability to face danger while thinking. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had courage along with valor, two attributes that are regarded as heroic. Cowardice is regarded as the lack of  courage and a higher than normal amount of fear but there are degrees of cowardice. The lowest form is a coward who lacks self-esteem. Even cowards seem to have a sense of who they are and know they have some value so they stay in the world with others. Some however lack any idea of what they are so they refuse to reveal themselves. They are psychotic. because their fears rule their lack of judgment. In the military cowards are summarily dispatched I suppose on the good riddence theory.

Unable to face life as ordinary people their fright directs their actions. Metaphorically they slither along the botton recesses of life.
